Bacteria and virus free room air in medical practices, treatment rooms and waiting rooms

The one who sees the doctor in times of a spreading influenza, of gastrointestinal infections or similar infectious diseases usually has to share the waiting room with sniffling, coughing or even febrile persons sitting next to him. Going to the dentist or the eye specialist also provides the same risk potential if e.g. a large part of the population is affected by an influenza epidemic. Not a pleasant thought, and some patients consequently won’t see the doctor just when it was reasonable and necessary. The result of pure fear to catch an infection of even more dangerous illnesses such as SARS-CoV-2, norovirus or MERS-CoV in a waiting or treatment room. These people have good reason to be anxious. A lot of infectious diseases like influenza, gastroenteritis and COVID-19 are transmitted via droplets and smear infection. Even spraying and wiping good quality disinfectants meticulously and regularly does not help if the harmful pathogens are literally flying around in the air


Example of a waiting room: With an area of 6 x 6 m and a room height of 2.5 m, the depicted waiting room has an air volume of 90 m³. One TAC V+ device is able to circulate this volume almost 13 times per hour (ventilation performance 1,200 m³/h), which corresponds to a circulation rate of 13 per hour.

Waiting and treatment rooms require special attention

For this reason, it is particularly indispensable to keep room and breathing air of medical practices and fully occupied waiting rooms – with an increased risk of infection – maximally clean and free from suspended matter and pathogenic microorganisms, all in addition to the disinfection of medical instruments and of the most diverse surfaces. This serves to protect the employees but also the mostly elderly patients that are part of the risk group due to their weakened immune system.

Clean air is crucial for a successful treatment

Pathogenic viruses and bacteria are persistent and survive quite some time in the room air. Studies have shown that e.g. the SARS-CoV-2 virus can stay in the air for several hours while remaining infective. And every additional patient entering the waiting room increases the invisible risk of infection for the other people sitting in the room.

Separating walls only separate people, not virus-infected air

Protective screens or separating walls alone, e.g. installed at the reception, do not prevent viruses from spreading through the air. Separating walls made of Plexiglas, similar constructions and also protective masks for mouth and nose indeed protect from direct ‘virus drizzle rain’ caused by certain manners of talking. However, they do not provide protection from germ-laden aerosol particles that are released into the room air while talking and breathing, where they will continue floating in the form of aerosol accumulations for several hours.

In fact, combining the use of masks and separating walls is a first important approach to reduce the risk of a direct droplet infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Nevertheless, this measure does not protect from a far greater danger of infection – talking persons emitting accumulations of aerosol particles which will then freely float in the room air. Such aerosol accumulations overcome any kind of sneeze guard barrier or separating wall with no problem. This is how particles of aerosol can easily access the respiratory tract or the eyes of other people staying behind the separating wall.

Protect employees and patients with a 360-degree hygiene concept

Only a coordinated all-round solution with a direct sneeze guard barrier or a separating wall and additional high frequency air purification reliably and permanently reduces the risk of infection. For this reason, don’t only rely on physical barriers such as protective masks for mouth and nose and separating walls for protecting personnel and patients. Aerosol particles in the room air don’t stick to the distance rules – as they potentially transport viruses, they are the real source of danger!
