From a physical point of view, natural ventilation only makes sense if there is a large temperature difference between inside and outside or if it is quite windy outside, according to Munich scientists. If this is not the case, it would take a long time to carry out an air exchange – 3 to 5 minutes – which is by no means sufficient.

Natural ventilation may be easy to implement during the warmer seasons by simply having the windows permanently open, but this isn’t securing maximum safety against direct infection. It’s also seen as unsafe, uncomfortable for children and economically and ecologically questionable – certainly not a sufficient long term option.

In addition, continuous ventilation is not a good option, especially in winter. With open windows, the viruses that cause colds may spread more easily in lower temperatures leading to more infections for teachers and students.

The German scientists recommend the use of highly efficient room air purifiers in addition to intermittent ventilation. An air purifier draws in the ambient air via a fan that is as large as possible and directs it into the interior of the air purifier where it is cleaned by filters. The air is then released cleanly and safely back into the room.

Study with a fully occupied classroom

Most of the experiments with room air purifiers so far have taken place with dummies instead of real people. How well the devices work in crowded classrooms with up to 30 people sitting had not been investigated. A study by the University of Frankfurt closed this gap.

For a week, Frankfurt atmospheric researchers tested four air purifiers in a school classroom with teachers and 27 students. The result: 30 minutes after switching on, an air purifier had removed 90 per cent of the aerosols from the air.

The risk of infection can be significantly reduced, and the study leader stated that this significantly reduces the risk of infection from a highly infectious person in the classroom – a super spreader. “That is why we recommend the schools this winter to use HEPA air purifiers with a sufficiently high air throughput.” Joachim Curtius from the experimental atmospheric research group at the Goethe University in Frankfurt advised. Link: Testing mobile air purifiers in a school classroom: Reducing the airborne transmission risk for SARS-CoV-2
