Ensuring safe presence at school requires guaranteed virus absence

Real face-to-face teaching requires personal closeness, immediate feedback via gestures, behaviour, questions and answers. Therefore, teachers can actually not do without the direct contact on site in order to perform their educational task in a realistic fashion.

However, this direct contact always carries the risk of an infection with airborne diseases. In best case, this could be flue, in times of corona it could be Covid-19. Not only since Corona times it has been highly recommended to take additional hygiene measures in addition to the regular ones: The air in the room and particularly the air for breathing must be kept as clean as possible and free from viruses or bacteria. This serves to protect the teaching staff, but also the pupils.

Clean air in the classroom protects teachers and students

Pathogenic viruses and bacteria are an invisible danger in every school. The pathogens can survive in the room air for several hours, presenting a potential health risk with every breath. Current studies prove that e.g. the Sars-CoV-2 virus can stay in the air for several hours while remaining infective.

The virus gets into the room air by means of aerosols that are emitted when breathing and speaking. Infectious viruses adhere to these tiny particles and the virus-carrying aerosols waft through the air due to their light weight and are inhaled unnoticed by other persons in the same schoolroom, for instance by fellow pupils or teachers.

Dividing school classes into two groups does not offer protection against virus-laden air

It is an elementary component of hygiene concepts to reduce class sizes in times of spreading epidemics. But no matter how small the groups are into which the pupils are divided: it does not prevent the virus from spreading through the air. Even using protective masks for mouth and nose does not entirely offer protection against direct ‘virus drizzle rain’ caused by “juicy” talking. Protective masks definitely do not offer protection from germ-loaded aerosols that are released into the room air while talking and breathing, where they will continue floating in the form of aerosol accumulations for several hours.

Any person talking loudly is sufficient to have thousands of aerosols spreading into the room air per minute. The number even increases when care workers and children sing. Indeed, protective masks are a first important approach to reduce the risk of a direct droplet infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, this measure does not protect from a far greater danger of infection – accumulations of aerosol particles floating freely in the room air!

Such aerosol clouds even overcome physical barriers like sneeze guard barriers or separating walls. This is how particles of aerosol can easily access the respiratory tract or the eyes. The long time aerosols stay in the air are the reason for another problem: Since aerosols spread with air currents, the room air will be mixed every time the door is opened.

Protecting teachers and pupils with a 360-degree hygiene concept

Only a coordinated all-round solution of all possible hygiene measures and additional high frequency air purification reliably and permanently reduces the risk of infection. So don’t exclusively rely on physical separation, protective masks and washing hands regularly for protection against infections. Aerosol particles in the room air don’t stick to the distance rules – as they potentially transport viruses, they are the real source of danger!

Effective against bacteria and virus accumulations

Trotec high-frequency air cleaners are equipped with HEPA high-performance air filters of class H14 which filter out more than 99.995 % of all fine suspended particles larger than 0.1 µm with a transmittance of only 0.005 %. Or in other words: No more than five of 100,000 particles pass the H14 filter. Thanks to this unique feature, these kinds of high-performance filters are also used in operation theatres or comparable hygienically sensitive areas in order to produce clean air. Well-known viral strains such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV or Covid-19 have a particle size of 0.005 to 0.1 µm. These accumulations are referred to as germs and will be filtered out reliably by the Trotec H14 air cleaning filters.

You can also insert a HEPA H14 high-performance air filter from Trotec into your TAC air cleaner if you already possess a TAC device. The H14 filters are available as an accessory, e.g. for the professional air cleaners TAC 3000, TAC 5000 or TAC 6500. Special H14 high-performance air filter with thermal self-regeneration function

This air cleaning performance is made possible by a synchronous system of efficient prefiltering and final particulate air filtration, provided by the integrated H14 high-performance air filter in compliance with EN 1822 (ISO 45H filter ISO 29463) by Trotec in a special heat-resistant version. This special filter is integrated in the devices TAC V+ and TES 200 and is heated up in intervals which will inactivate all viruses remaining in the filter, serving for a 100 % decontamination of the filter. 

TAC V+ and TES 200 are part of the same assembly and therefore provide the identical fan performance and HEPA air purification function. The TES 200 can, however, also be used for combined room heating, thermal decontamination of rooms and surfaces and thermal pest control. The reason for this are the additionally integrated, powerful electric heating module and enhanced programming options for various air treatment scenarios.
